ALAN CHARLTON – GRID PAINTINGS




Wir freuen uns sehr, aktuelle Arbeiten des englischen Malers Alan Charlton zu präsentieren.

Seit seiner ersten Einzelausstellung in der Konrad Fischer Galerie 1972 stellt Alan Charlton regelmäßig seine grauen Bilder hier aus. Auf konzeptuelle Weise untersucht Charlton innerhalb eines festgelegten Rahmens die Möglichkeiten von Malerei, indem er auf jegliche Darstellung in konventionellem Sinne verzichtet. Seine formale Disziplin schafft monochrome graue Bilder mit absolut homogener Oberfläche ohne jeden sichtbaren Pinselstrich. Einzig deren Formen und Größen veränderte er im Laufe seiner nunmehr 40-jährigen Schaffenszeit. Charltons Bilder verstehen sich nicht als ikonische autonome Gemälde, die zentral und isoliert auf der Wand platziert sind, sondern als skulpturale Bildobjekte, die mit dem Raum interagieren. Wichtige Rolle spielt dabei die Betonung des Seriellen oder Additiven. Die hier ausgestellten „Grid Paintings“ sind in mehrere gleiche Elemente aufgeteilt und vermitteln gleichzeitig den Eindruck von Einheit und Trennung.

Konrad Fischer Galerie gladly announces the opening of a solo exhibition including new works by the British artist Alan Charlton.

Since his first solo show at Konrad Fischer Galerie in 1972, the artist continues working with grey acrylic on canvas. The single canvases are always monochrome and of different shades of grey. The standard thickness of his paintings measures 4.5 cm which in turn determines the length and width of his canvases as a painting´s dimensions are always dividable by the factor 4.5.
Exploring the conceptual basis of painting in general, Charlton introduces a wide variety of formal possibilities. In groups of works like his Slot-, Hole-, Line, Channel-, Outline- or most recently his Grid-Paintings Charlton has developed different solutions to relate his paintings to the walls and the exhibition space as a whole. Seriallity and order are balanced by uniqueness and spontaneous invention as his works only come to life when installed in a specific space with which they interact. The seemingly quiet works develop an unexpected rhythm as the viewer explores them from different perspectives without being offered an ideal place at which to stand and look. From an historical point of view Alan Chalton´s work holds a unique position between Minimal art and Conceptual Art but finally the beholder cannot ignore the striking presence of the paintings themselves.
